| Rise, Darth Redneck... |
[May. 17th, 2008|08:03 pm] |
My conversion was progressing nicely. I drink cheap beer, drive trucks for a living, live for sports, get all the jokes on the Blue Collar Comedy Tour.. but one thing was missing.
Today, I am complete. Since buying Darby we have made at least three trips to Kragen Auto Parts, and this afternoon, in 90° temperatures, I washed my truck.
I never wash cars - I used to work at a car wash! But Darby gets parked under a tree many nights, so my beautiful white truck was getting dirty!
This, of course, required a trip to Kragen for a wash mitt, car wash detergent, and a new bucket. We have buckets, but I needed a new one.
Darby is clean, there is balance in the universe.
I suppose I need to start caring about NASCAR now... |

I believe what just happened on our telly would be called 'crack fic' in the world of fandom.
That was gloriously, fabulously silly. Daft as a sideboard full of puffins. Bravo. |

Thursday: joined gym at work. Friday: went to gym. It's very new and I'm currently the only member, which is a bit weird. As the only one there, I have effectively got a personal trainer. She takes me through some cardio & abs stuff, is polite about my ludicrous lack of fitness. Home for shower and nice dinner cooked by bytepilot. Saturday: lie in bed, feeling like someone has repeatedly punched me in the solar plexus. Cats very sympathetic.
Finished Book 20: Mr Timothy by Louis Bayard. Still undecided what I think of it. |

this amuses me. Judging by the sellers feedback, selling free software compiled for windows is quite a lucrative business. |

| Teeth will be provided! |
[May. 17th, 2008|08:15 am] |
My new teeth! Since I still have my natural front teeth, the dentures are missing those. I go in for another fitting next Thursday (there were a coupe of issues with the bite) and on June 5th I get my dentures!
On June 6th, I eat an entire order of skillet queso by myself, followed by a steak.
( Cut because this might squick some folks. ) |

Also to make little stick figure ninjas out of beads and wire.
( Because I can. )
Pictures, straight off the phone, so a little lumpy... |

| It Takes a Blowhard |
[May. 16th, 2008|03:10 pm] |

Normally I regard Chris Mathews as a destructive force in the US political conversation, but here he uses his powers for good instead of evil. Watch him, sniffing out the telltale scent of historical ignorance, mete out a cruel, relentless, and utterly deserved humiliation.
(If you prefer, here's the unedited version of the same segment, with the comments by the second guest, Mark Green, left in:)

Ever wonder what it's like to watch someone hoist themselves by their own petard? And by "hoist" I mean "eviscerate." And by "petard" I mean "ignorance."
It'd be kind of enjoyable, if it wasn't so sickening.
Ganked from the ever-astute robin_d_laws

"AO History test essay on Napoleonic War went well. Julius Ceasar OK, but spoiled by other people who were watching. Found 50p." |

| The Bedford Park is the new centre of gothdom (we hope) |
[May. 16th, 2008|03:10 pm] |
All totally updated now I have the gen
Tonight Blood and Velvet is on at the Bedford Park, which couldn't really be handier for us, so we will certainly be putting our head around the door.
And tomorrow Zombina and the Skeletones are playing there - there was also to be an appearance from a friend of a friend's band, but they've cancelled. Don't know if I'm going to make that one, but if you are let me know.
So hopefully all the goth clubs in London will move to Streatham and we'll never have to take a night bus again... |

| apple store fun. |
[May. 16th, 2008|10:22 am] |
Swung by the opening of the new Apple store in Boston yesterday. Complete madness. Hundreds of people queuing. Didn't get to go inside. Did however bump into the FSF doing their anti-DRM schtick. Their guy with a camera had some problems or other, so they asked me to take a bunch of pics. I happily obliged and watched the ensuing chaos for a while. |

[May. 16th, 2008|03:10 pm] |
God, this looks brilliant.
We watched the trailer to start with and the other guys didn't know what it was for and, quite understandably, initially thought it was a trailer for an Elric movie.

| Rickrolling... |
[May. 16th, 2008|02:29 pm] |
I'd never heard of Rickrolling until I saw John Kovalic's latest Dork Tower strip the other day. Even then I didn't have a clue what it was so just put it down to the characters last comment referring to me ("I'm too young to be too old for the internet!") - especially as I'm now a year older than I was :p
Anyway, Sean just started talking about Rickrolling at work and Dave also knew what he was talking about.
I have now been informed, been shown Youtube footage or it and have managed to pull myself back into tune with todays internet youth it seems.
The internet continues to amaze me with all the little social phenomena that arise from it.
I'm sure the forefathers of science invention and science fiction would never have thought about the many uses it has these days and the fads it throws into fame for 15 minutes... |

| I has the Lurgy |
[May. 16th, 2008|10:05 am] |
| [ | mood |
| | sick | ] | In the form of a particularly sweaty snotty cold, which has left my head feeling like it is stuffed with soggy tissues. As is my wastepaper basket!
So while it is a bit poor to return to work from a months holiday and go off sick for two days, that is exactly what I have done.
Funnily enough, I got sick pretty much immediately after landing in NZ as well, though that was gastric. Maybe this is some new and foul manifestation of jet lag that ones immune system falls over for a week. Though in this case I think its more likely that one of the 400 other bastards with whom I was obliged to share air in a flying tin can for 24 hours gave it to me.
Hopefully two days on the sofa in my jim jams will effect sufficient of a cure for me to be feeling better for the Asilio Busola event on Saturday. |
